Statement

My practice explores the objectification of the female figure in fashion image, and I comment on its use of the body by transforming it into an experimental prop for display purposes, through the manipulation of the subject and object within the photograph.

By mocking the illusion of object as something which creates a sense of belonging and stability in navigating our day-to-day life, there is a playfulness within the outward presentation of the work, whilst it inwardly looks to highlight troubling concerns. Exploring human consciousness, I intend to create a subconscious discourse behind the physical existence of my images.

Very important to my work is the production of the image. The use of a photography studio offers me curatorial powers in contextualising a narrative. I look to adopt attributes of the fashion image, all whilst representing unusual content that relates, yet also pushes back against the issues in the industry; some of which being those revolving normative bodies and the depiction of the female figure.

By manipulating the nuances of photography when shooting my images, I have found that I have the possibility to provoke, yet not dictate its interpretation.
