Untiled #1
This ceramic pot is part of a raku-fired series created in France in April 2024. It belongs to a larger body of work titled Of Wood and Water, which draws from my recent research conducted in Jamaica and the writing of my thesis at the Royal College of Art, where I graduated this year. This project forms the foundation of a developing methodology I plan to expand through a PhD.
Raku firing, a traditional Japanese pottery technique, uses low firing temperatures to produce distinctive glazing effects. In this piece, the rich red clay is accented by iridescent hues and darker spots where the flames have interacted with the surface. The pot, hand-built and subjected to a chemical and fire process, embodies themes of embryonic splitting and aquatic life. In line with my research and body of work, it also engages with the symbolic concepts of the Black Atlantic and mermaid births, exploring themes of migration, connectivity, and transformation.
