Faceless Figures
Oil on canvas
My work explores the interplay of complementary colours, specifically green and red, creating a ghostly luminosity and an ethereal atmosphere and a feeling of ambiguity. Drawing inspiration from Helen Levitt's 1940s photography, I have chosen to depict the figures faceless, highlighting instead their body language, inviting viewers to notice and connect with their interactions or their lack thereof ; the ambiguity of individual isolation in a crowd. The quick dynamic and tactile brushstrokes enhance the glowing contrasts of light and dark and an illusion of 3D depth producing a mesmerising and eerie effect.
