Posing family from 1920s
This artwork is based on a haunting photograph from the 1920s depicting unknown individuals. I transferred these images onto canvas, transforming the surface into a portal to an obscure past filled with war, chaos, and daily life — details now lost to time. I aim to evoke reflection, encouraging viewers to contemplate the intertwined stories of the past or recall their own experiences with old photographs.
My emotional response to the photograph’s contents guides the painting's size, colours, lines,
and intensity. Sometimes the result surprises even me, as in this piece where I used a yellow
colour I rarely employ, yet I never alter the original scene. This approach is also reflected in the
non-linear perspective and the merging of foreground and background into a single pictorial
mass, similar to how memories fade into a fog and emerge in consciousness only when attention
is directed at them.
For me, painting is a physical, material experience. I use drips, expressive marks, and oil stick
doodles to interact with a scene, feeling it through my bodily response to the original picture. The
large scale of my work allows me to be very gestural, making the process of painting close to a
dance.
