Straw Into Gold
'Straw into Gold' was inspired by the Hungarian version of the folk tale Rumpelstiltskin and the book by Rebecca Solnit, ' Cinderella Liberator'. It re-processes the artist's memories of first encountering the story as a child. As her understanding of the narrative transformed into a rather dark vision of its contemporary relevance, the painting also got gradually darker. The theme revolves around control and surrender, power and responsibility, boundaries and connection in a symbolic manner coalescing in the motion of weaving. The translucent enamel paint covering the copper base has a special effect. When brightly lit, the copper's reflection behaves as a lightbox, highlighting the painting from below. When that happens, it becomes extremely vivid. In low light, the dark, glossy surface and intriguing cellular texture take precedence. It has a strong feminine aura, with its dark, primordial and joyfully bright manifestations.
