La Madre
'La Madre' was painted with translucent enamel on copper base. When brightly lit, the coppers' reflection behaves as a lightbox, highlighting the painting from below. When that happens, it becomes extremely vivid. In low light, the dark, glossy surface and intriguing cellular texture take precedence.
It was inspired by the folkloric traditions of Hungary and the floral embroideries created by the artist's mother. The painting process explored folklore as a meditative and coping mechanism by which women created cultural continuity over centuries in Hungary, counterbalancing the interruptive nature of war and displacement. It comprises four 40 x 40 cm copper panels mounted into a single box frame to be hung in a diamond format on its corner.
