Ammit is an ancient Egyptian goddess or demoness, who is often depicted with the head of a crocodile, the front legs of a lion, and the hind legs of a hippopotamus. Her name means "the devourer" because she was believed to eat the hearts of the deceased if they were deemed unworthy during the Judgment of the Dead, a funerary ritual that took place in the underworld.
