Statement

As a studio-based painter I rely on photographic images. They can preserve the moment I choose to paint and has provided my source material since my degree. These may be my own, others’ images, those taken from the internet or shared on social media platforms. These images are the inspiration for my work and the ability to change the image through filters has led to a focus on colour within my work selecting and enhancing images I find or take.I work in acrylic paint building images over a period, returning again and again to a work making changes to colour and mark sometimes destroying an image through sanding back to start again. My work sometimes references to art history, literature, classicism, and symbolism to evoke an understanding of the personality of the sitter. As a gay man I am also interested in exploring the multiplicity of images and ideals we are presented with and redefining the idea of masculinity. My work explore narrative, colour, line, composition, and mark-making to evoke an emotion or develop the narrative within an image.
